"Dispelling the Myth of Aging"
with Mark Lamm by Frankie Lee Slater
Whole Life Times, November 1990
When I was 19 I broke my back in a car accident. I was a
passenger in the rear seat and the spare tire came into the car,
crushing my third lumbar. Conventional medicine did little to
educate me about preventative measures so my back gradually
atrophied, making me stiffen and age before my time.
Over the years my back became my teacher as I began to seek
solutions to restore movement and overall health and vitality. I
delved into yoga, Rolfing and Soma body work, Feldenkrais and
the Alexander Technique,neuro-linguistics, chiropractic,
acupuncture and more. Each took me further along my path of
self-discovery to a greater understanding of our magnificent
body-mind connection. But it was not until I experienced Mark
Lamm's BioSyncŪ (life synchronicity) method that a feeling of
well-being returned which had not been mine since the accident
18 years before. BioSync is a method for going manually very
deeply into the connective tissue, while the body is supported
by specially designed equipment. Thus there is never any stress
on the body as the work is being done.
I had a distant memory of what it was to feel good in my body,
but it was beyond my ability to re-access until Mark went into
the connective tissue, and released the physical and emotional
trauma at its core. Lamm likens the body to a bio-computer.
"When the computer is working for you, you can access, activate
and manifest what you want in life. Our bodies record all of our
previous traumas and keep this 'memory' locked in our connective
tissues. Painful events, both emotional and physical, that
occurred in the past manifest themselves as restrictions in the
body and dysfunctional patterns which skew our behavior. By
releasing the connective tissue, we can go beyond the
restrictions to a whole new level of functioning."
What I like about Lamm is he believes in possibilities as much
as I do. It never quite jelled with me when I was told I might
have permanent problems with my back, or when one friend wrote
off his chronic back pain as "I'm getting old," or another said
he had bad knees because he played football for years, as if
that were some sort of fait accompli. Lamm developed BioSync to
help free people of these perceived limitations so that we can
have access to our fullest potential as human beings.
Professional athletes John McEnroe and Cedric Hardman, and Neuro-linguistics
powerhouse Tony Robbins are among those who reap the benefits.
At age 63, with the body of a 30-year old, Mark Lamm is himself
a testament to longevity. Past affiliations with Yogi Bhajan and
kundalini yoga have given him a knowledge of energy systems
which is incorporated not only into his work, but also is
evident in his personal physicality. I asked him to explain what
"aging" really means, and how the BioSync method of penetrating,
lengthening and unwinding the connective tissue can provide a
renewed sense of youthful vitality as it has for me. He
explained about collagen cross-linking.
Collagen is a fibrous protein which is often called the mortar
of the cells. It makes up 25% of the body's protein and is the
chief constituent of the connective tissue. When we are infants
our connective tissue is soft, pliable and almost jelly-like. In
order for the body to develop strength and tone, a biochemical
process takes place called collagen cross-linking, in which two
strands of collagen bind at their middle.
In youth, cross-linking is moderated by unlinking enzymes which
help keep the body firm yet elastic. As we go through life , the
production of these enzymes decreases while the cumulative
effect of physical and emotional trauma and external sources
such as preservatives and pollutants cause excessive
cross-linking. The result is the phenomenon we know as "aging".
Mark Lamm has this to say, "insurance actuaries state that the
average person shrinks four to six inches during a lifetime of
approximately 75 years. A buildup of collagen cross-linking
accounts for this shrinkage, leathery and wrinkled skin, the
stiffening of bones, and other deteriorating qualities we
associate with aging. BioSync technology is designed to release
collagen cross-linking and, essentially, energize and youth-enize
the body."
Lamm says that part of the aging process can be attributed to
the limited models we accepted in the past, and suggests we
choose more holistic models which empower us to reach our
fullest potential, I'm reminded of the time Roger Bannister
broke the record for the 4-minute mile. As impossible as it
seemed before, once Bannister proved it could be done, many
others followed suit. Mark Lamm is just such a pioneer,
dispelling the myth of aging, and facilitating people to be free
in their bodies. Not only is my gnawing pain gone for the first
time in a long time but, generally, I feel better about myself
and the world around me.
